Hello!

I am a trustee for a community college in Washington State. While I can go on about how important and prestigious that is and how it is such a great honor to have been appointed by the Governor, in fact, only a handful of people actually care. To me, the most important thing about the position is that I can help to keep an incredibly vital and important institution running and moving forward to face a most uncertain future.

I do not come from a traditional educational background. I have worked in high tech for more than 30 years and been a witness to some of the most fundamental changes to our society; the rise of the ubiquitous personal computer and spread of the internet to all facets of our daily lives. There are many that see me as unqualified to be a member of the governing body of a college but there are others that see my background as a strength to help move the institutions into the 21st century. As with all major shifts in our society, there are significant consequences to these changes and higher education is not exempt.

I decided to start this blog to write down and share my thoughts on the problems facing the system, how we might navigate the uncertain waters ahead and, just as importantly, celebrate the successes we accomplish. I hope you enjoy my thoughts.

And what blog would be complete with out a disclaimer? The writings herein are solely my opinion. I am not speaking for the Board of Trustees, the College or the State of Washington.
